ELECTRIC MOTORS - DEGREES OF PROTECTION: INGRESS PROTECTION (IP)
MThe IP classifies and rates the degrees of protection provided against intrusion of solid objects, dust in electrical enclosures.The first characteristic numeral indicates the degree of protection provided by the enclosure topersons and to the parts of the machine inside the enclosure.The second characteristic numeral indicates the degree of protection provided by theenclosure with respect to harmful effects due to ingress of water.
ELECTRIC MOTORS – INSULATION CLASSES
EInsulation class indicates the maximum temperature the motor insulation can withstand without failure. The following table shows the maximum operating temperatures for commonly used classes of insulation.
Electric motor power values on the labels or in the catalog are valid for maximum 40° ambient temperature, sea level, nominal voltage and frequency.
Electric motor's windings temperature must notexceed the permissible temperature shown in the insulation class table. For example F class insulated electric motor's winding temperature cannot exceed 155° C. Electric motor manufacturers usually permit for B class insulation temperatures while using F class insulation materials to get 25 °C safety. This ensures safety for higher ambient temperatures, high altitude or high and low voltage operating conditions. You can overload our electric motors %12 safely for normal working conditions, while you can exceed windings life keeping motors temperature between the permissible temperatures of motors insulation class.
